Where horological history meets the icy frontier. The Swatch x Blancpain Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms in Arctic Ocean is the most historically rich and visually distinctive model in the entire five-piece collection — a vintage-inspired tribute to one of the most important dive watches ever made, reimagined for the modern collector at a price point that made the watch world stop and take notice.
The story begins in 1953. Jean-Jacques Fiechter, then co-CEO of Blancpain and a passionate scuba diver himself, designed the original Fifty Fathoms — the world's first true diver's watch, built to meet the demands of military and civilian divers in a discipline that was still in its infancy. Seventy years later, Blancpain and Swatch came together to celebrate that legacy in the most unexpected and democratic way possible — placing the DNA of one of watchmaking's most revered icons into an innovative Bioceramic case, powered by the remarkable SISTEM51 automatic movement.
The Arctic Ocean model is the purist's choice of the collection. Unlike the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean variants which draw from the modern Fifty Fathoms design language, the Arctic Ocean reaches back to the 1960s — featuring vintage circular hour indices, no date window and the legendary "NO RADIATIONS" symbol on the dial — a red trefoil on a yellow background with a white cross cutting through it. This emblem was used by Blancpain on original 1960s Fifty Fathoms models to indicate the absence of radium in the luminous material — a coveted and historically significant detail that watch collectors have cherished for decades, and one that makes the Arctic Ocean immediately identifiable as the most archivally faithful model in the Scuba Fifty Fathoms collection.
The soft beige Bioceramic case and crown carry a silky matte finish — durable, scratch-resistant and unlike anything else on your wrist. The gradient dial is printed in multiple layers of colour for depth and warmth, with Grade A Super-LumiNova on all hour indexes, hands and bezel scale for outstanding legibility in low light and underwater. The unidirectional rotating Bioceramic bezel mimics the sapphire-covered bezel of the actual Fifty Fathoms, while the transparent sapphire display caseback reveals the SISTEM51 movement in full — decorated with a digital print of the Arctic Ocean and the Dendronotus Frondosus nudibranch, the soft, subtly shaped sea creature found in the icy Arctic waters that inspired the entire colourway. Five inscriptions run across the caseback: PASSION FOR DIVING — LICENCE TO EXPLORE — OCEAN BREATH — PROTECT WHAT YOU LOVE — IMMERSE YOURSELF.
The NATO strap is constructed from recycled fishing nets removed from the sea — a sustainability statement as considered and deliberate as every other detail on this watch. The pin buckle and loops are crafted from Bioceramic material to match the case perfectly.
Water resistant to 91 metres — exactly 50 fathoms — with a 90-hour power reserve, an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring and automatic winding via the SISTEM51 rotor. A genuine Swiss Made automatic diver's watch at a price that has no precedent in the history of Swiss watchmaking.
