Just as we observe the Moon's phases from Earth across a 29.5-day cycle, the Earth itself exhibits phases when viewed from the surface of the Moon — cycling through the same sequence of illumination in reverse, on the same 29.5-day schedule. When we see a full Moon from Earth, an observer standing on the Moon would see a new Earth — a dark disc in the sky, our entire planet in shadow. When we see a new Moon, they would see a full Earth — our entire world blazing with reflected sunlight above the lunar horizon.
